How do you become a Firefighter?

Firefighter Qualifications

To be a firefighter with the Waveland Fire Department, you must meet the Mississippi Fire Personnel Minimum Standards and Certification Board (MSCB) fire personnel certification requirements.

The MSCB certifies fire personnel who have met the guidelines in accordance with Mississippi Code 45-11-203, 45-11-251, and 45-11-253.

Fire personnel employed full-time by any local governmental firefighting unit after January 1, 1991, working a cumulative time of two thousand eight hundred (2800) compensated hours must meet the minimum training requirements, as established by the MSCB. Fire Personnel employed with a local firefighting unit prior to January 1, 1991 are not required to meet the requirements of the MSCB. This is the sole qualifying factor for any exemption under the grandfather clause of the act.

To become a State Certified Firefighter all applicants must meet the following guidelines:

Be a minimum of twenty-one years of age.
Be a high school graduate or posses a GED
Be of good physical condition and capable of performing the duties under conditions inherent to the profession as verified by a licensed physician
Have met the physical fitness requirements of the MSCB

Individuals who meet the minimum employment guidelines and have successfully completed a training program approved by the MSCB are eligible for certification as a State Certified firefighter provided they successfully complete a written examination administered by the MSCB.

Any firefighter hired without MSCB certification must successfully complete an approved training course, certification examination and obtain certification within one year from their date of hire.
